Helena grew up outside Munich, Germany. Her father was in the hops business; her grandparents were in the restaurant industry. Restaurants and beer shaped her life.

John is a St. Louis native and the great-great-grandson of Adolphus Busch—yes, that Busch. Beer is in his DNA.

During COVID, John was in Europe studying brewing and spent time with Helena’s father exploring hops. The couple met, fell in love, married, and moved to St. Louis to brew up their own brewery and restaurant.

Located at 9514 Olive Blvd. in Olivette, Missouri, Great Heart quickly hopped onto the list of St. Louis’ best breweries. Shiny copper tanks produce lagers and ales that set the heart aflutter, while the kitchen turns out tasty dishes with authentic German, Swiss, and other European influences.

The setting is packed with Helena’s family treasures—photos, posters, decorative touches, and whatever else she loves and has collected along the way.

Despite its size, the two-story space brims with cozy, comfortable cheer. Great Heart has become so popular that John and Helena have added an outdoor beer garden.
